Villasimius, Sardinia (ITALY)

Villasimius: a bit of geography...

Due to its excellent geographical position and its favorable climatic conditions, the area was inhabited since ancient times, where Nuragic, Phoenician-Punic settlements were to be found, together with settlements dating back to the Roman republic and imperial age.

The Villasimius municipality currently has an area of 56 sq km. It borders to the North with Mount Minniminni (725 m), and to the South with Isola dei Cavoli. It borders to the East with Isola di Serpentara and to the West with the eastern slopes of Capo Boi.

The coastline extends 32 km; two inlets are to be found to the East and West of Capo Carbonara, one of them being lashed by Scirocco wind and the other by Libeccio wind. The small town raised and developed along the actual Via Umberto I°, which was once called "Bie de mesu bidda", i.e. the road dividing the town in the middle. The road branches South into two roads, the one towards Capo Carbonara and the other towards the town of Simius. It joins North the road leading to Castiadas Former Penal Colony (presently Museo delle Vecchie Carceri - Museum of Old Prisons).

Villasimius: a bit of history...

Originating from the ancient town of Crabonaxia, the town had no illuminations until 1938, when ten carbide lamps were installed in Via Umberto I° in order to light up the settlement at least in the early hours of the night. Only in the Fifties, the town was equipped with electric current and telephony lines. The St. Mary little church is situated in the homonymous plain along the road to Cagliari, approximately 3 km away from the town. It is probably a building which already existed and was later re-used for worship purposes. There is evidence that such building collapsed in 1927 and was shortly after rebuilt by the inhabitants of Villasimius. Celebrations in honor of Saint Mary are held every year in September: it is one of the oldest festivals in town celebrating the nine months after the Holy Annunciation. The "old army barracks" consists of a large building facing the current Via Aspromonte. It has long housed both soldiers and prisoners, and closed down in the Sixties. Granite quarrying and manufacturing were for a long time the main source of employment for the people living in Villasimius. The ruins of these activities can be presently found in Riu Trottu (Is Molentis quarry) and in Portu su Forru (Usai quarry), making the homonymous beaches even more typical.
